ASK MARK: DO I COUNT PROTEIN TOWARDS MY CALORIES FOR THE DAY?
I had the opportunity during the summer to look trough someone’s diet to help him fine-tune it. His problem was that every time he was on a ‘gain cycle’, he got fat. And it happened pretty quickly.
I told him first that the traditional ‘500 calories above maintenance’ was a recipe for fat gain. I told him my advice to clients is 200-300 above maintenance. He said he was already doing that. But it wasn’t long until I figured out where he was going wrong.
He was shooting for 2750 Calories per day…but he was not counting his protein grams towards his total!
When I asked why, he told me that protein goes towards building muscle, so it didn’t count towards regular energy intake, right?
Woah! It totally counts. All calories from fat, carbs and protein count towards your calories for the day. When we use formulae or calculators to tell us how much to eat, these methods are ALREADY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT your higher needs for protein and calories. So everything counts.

Bottom Line: It all counts. You’ll overeat very easily if you are not counting your protein towards your daily totals. If you eat 200g protein/day, that’s 800 Calories that you weren’t counting!
So protein is not free. Make sure you count it 🙂
