Ok this is a weird question, and not something I talk about much, but I DO get asked it quite often. So if you’re curious, here’s the answer!

Will sex before training hurt your performance or gains?

 

There’s 2 main points that cause concern here:

(1) Some people say that because sex is physically (and mentally?) taxing. So they’re more likely to want to go to bed instead of the gym when they’re done.

(2) Secondly, for men in particular, there is a belief that a “release” can cause a drop in testosterone levels.

Ok, the first point…

Rubbish. It’s psychological. There are many many people doing more strenuous activities than sex before hitting the gym and they do just fine.

Some days I’m wiped! Exhausted! And I knock out my best performances. In fact, my last full-body workout 2 days ago was a perfect example of this. Training was the last thing in the world I wanted to do, but I never never never let that stop me. I simply DO NOT skip workouts…ever. And sometimes those tired days end up being the best ones!

 

Secondly…the testosterone thing. Not true. And can be quite the opposite. Research shows that “having an ejaculation does not acutely affect testosterone levels”. 

Sex can actually cause a man’s testosterone levels to increase, not decrease. This can only be beneficial to your workouts.

Remember that testosterone is the muscle-building hormone and is the main reason why women simply can’t build as muscle as men…not even close – they just don’t have the T-levels.
