How to Add Another Month to Your Year (Yes 13 Months!)

by Mark McManus on February 27, 2008

Fancy squeezing an extra month into your year?

What would you do with an extra month?

How is it possible?

Some of you are going to be able to get away with this, others aren’t. The idea for this post came recently when I realized just how much more time I have than the ‘average person.’

wake up!Apparently the average person sleeps 8 hours a night. I have mentioned previously that I sleep 5-6 hours. That extra time really adds up.

1/3rd of Your Life

Sleep is important. It’s important for muscle growth as well as other things, but for some reason I don’t need as much as most people.

We are unconscious for 1/3rd of our lives! That’s a lot!

I sleep 5-6 hours Monday to Friday and 6-7 Saturday and Sunday. Let’s average that out to 6 hours a night.

If I am conscious for 2 extra hours per day, that amounts to 730 extra hours per year.

* 730/24 = 30.42 x 24hr days per year (or an extra month every year)

Also, the average person is only really conscious for 16 hours per day so:

* 730/16 = 45.63 extra conscious days

What would you do with all that extra time? If you are a busy person I’m sure you could use it.

Has it ever occurred to you that you might be someone who needs less sleep?

As I’ve said, it’s not for everyone but it’s certainly worth trying. I take advantage of this extra time in the mornings as I regularly rise around 5 – 5.30am. It gives me time to answer some emails, start writing an article, do some breathing exercises and think about everything I’m grateful for.

Try it! You’ll never know if you don’t.

Your buddy,

Mark McManus

It would be interesting to see, however, how much of a life is shortened by less sleep, thereby negating the additional hours. But then the additional hours would come earlier in life, where a person is more likely to be able to take advantage of them…

I like the concept, but for muscle building or fat loss purposes – I’d prefer to get at least 7 hours to ensure the best recovery possible.

you gain 1 month of free time but you lose 1 month of sleep which is when you build muscle!

If theres something I misread, let me know.

@ Marc – excellent point, if you’re gonna have extra hours, have them young!

@ Carl – You’re absolutely right. You have to do what’s best for you. I seem to be able to get away with it but if you need more, you need more.

Yeah! First time I read this post and I’m happy to say that I’m one of these people! All my friends sleep like forever – especially during sommer break! So what do I do when I get up like 3 hours before everyone else? You probably can guess that! Hehe, and they wonder why I’m so much bigger than them^^
(I never made that fancy calculation though – makes me feel good now :-D )

Dorian, good to know there’s someone else like me out there.
