Monster Whey Protein Shake Recipe!

by Mark McManus on February 25, 2008

You’re not going to build much muscle if you’re not eating enough.

One great thing about low-carb eating is that it is very satiating i.e. you feel satisfied sooner than when on a low-fat diet. This is good for cutting fat but could work against you if it causes you to under-eat.

To get around this it’s a great idea to get some liquid anabolic calories.

Introducing the Monster Whey Protein Shake

On certain days when I know I haven’t ate enough due to being very busy or otherwise, I make a high-fat, high-protein shake to take care of business. This would be taken at least an hour after my Post Workout Shake.

The BIG Protein Shake Recipe

You don’t have to worry about ‘over-eating’ on a low-carb diet so this protein shake is perfect for some muscle-building calories.

Remember, eat BIG when the goal is to build muscle. If you have an ectomorphic somatype, this shake will especially serve you well!

Stay Motivated!

I should probably mail you direct on this one to avoid the risk of a big debate on which protein supplement is the best but out of curiosity which manufacturer have you settled with over the years?
Being quite thin I have been told to avoid certain proteins as they can be different in their uses i.e some are better for cutting/weight loss etc?

thanks.

Thanks for the shake recipe. I am bookmarking your blog for my son who has just started weightlifting and has been complaining about not getting enough calories.

@ Andrics, I’ll be covering this topic soon in an upcoming post, thanks.

@ Celebrity Foods. Thanks, I’m glad to be of service.

Hi Mark, would it be ok/appropriate to use this for your post workout shake? I generally dont have the hours to fit in both.

thanks.

Hi Andrics,
My current thinking on this would be a ‘no’.
Post workout you want your protein absorbed as quickly as possible. A High-fat shake will slow the absorption down.
It’s great any other time but not post-workout.
Hope that helps,
Mark

I just tried one of these and they taste good!!

Didn’t bother with spenda and it tasted just fine. I could only
find fresh whipping cream [with 35.5% fat made from 100% fresh milk]. Will this do until I can find double cream?

Thanks for all your help Mark

It’s hard to imagine that eating a high fat high protein low carb diet won’t make you fat, even though you’ve explained it well in your other post..

maybe its the years of misinformation speaking though ..

First off, congrats once again on a great website with great ideas and great philosophy behind them too.

I’d love to have this but can’t have dairy (the consequences are not pleasant I can tell you). Can you think of a substitute for the cream. There is lactose free whole milk over here in the UK but obviously there is a big difference in the fat content between that and the cream:(
Can you think of anything else that could be used? I could add the whole milk for the dairy part (I think it helps carry the ptotein to the muscles), but still need those calories!
Cheers,
Ted

@Ted. I don’t think it’s possible. However, you should make friends with macadamia nuts for a very easy way to bump up your calories.
Perhaps you could buy a macadamia nut butter and water it down for the liquid portion of the shake.
