Did you hear about the magician Penn Jillette’s weight loss?

It’s an interesting story and I’ve watched loads of videos on YouTube of him talking about it. (If for no other reason than I just like to listen to this guy talk about stuff lol).

Anyway, he lost a lot of weight. And he did it quite quickly on a vegan diet.

However…what rarely gets talked about is that he lost a lot of muscle in the process!

He lost 105lbs in 4 months – 330lbs down to 225lbs.

It started with 2 weeks of a “mono diet” i.e. he ate only potatoes for the first 2 weeks. Then he ate a plant-based diet (at only 1000 Calories a day) for the rest of the 4 months.

Now that’s an impressive amount of weight loss. But he did lose a lot of muscle, and in my own opinion, you can tell – he’s not in great shape. He’s smaller, but his “shape” is not good.

He talks about his muscle loss in a Youtube video that I watched and haven’ been able to find again since. It’s a ‘Q and A’ and an audience member asks did he lose any muscle.

Anyway, my point here is to stop being so concerned about total body weight loss (especially you girls reading this).

Your body composition is what matters – more muscle mass and less fat mass. Your weight might not change much, but you’ll look incredible.

Here’s an example of a girl who “only” lost 5lbs, but looks totally different. I’m sure most women would be disappointed with “only” 5lbs of weight loss.

So stop being concerned about your total weight.

And stop jumping on the scales on a daily basis. Weight fluctuates up and down every day. You can lose fat in a day and weigh MORE the following day for a whole host of reasons. Once a week is more than enough.
