The Quickest, Easiest, High Protein Snack!

by Mark McManus on July 2, 2009

You’re going to LOVE this one.

It’s tasty and couldn’t be easier! Seriously, it kinda tastes like french toast :) .

Ever heard of halloumi cheese? I hadn’t until last week.

I saw a pic for a cheese recipe that looked just like the one at the top of this article. I thought, “Ok, I see the chicken, but where’s this halloumi cheese?”.

Turns out that’s not chicken, it’s the cheese! I had to try it out.

So I head to Tesco and pick up a packet, looks like the one below (although I didn’t buy the ‘light’ version).

When I got home I ripped open the packet and saw the following….

Hmm, didn’t look too appetizing!

Anyway, I cut some slices and got my frying pan warmed up. I then threw on the slices and was surprised when the cheese didn’t melt all over the place; it just turned a little crispy.

So I flipped them over and crisped the other side too.

The taste? Really good!

I experimented with a sprinkling of chopped chillies placed on top before frying. This was delicious BUT really burned the mouth off me – NEVER AGAIN!

Anyway, here’s the nutritional breakdown of halloumi…

TYPICAL NUTRITIONAL VALUES PER 100g
ENERGY 322Kcal
PROTEIN 22g
CARBOHYDRATE 1,8g
FAT 26g

A perfect M.A.N.S. snack. It’s also a great Total Six Pack Abs snack for the carb-controlled portion of the diet. High-carbers can purchase the lighter version to get the benefits of this tasty high-protein snack.

This will only take a couple of minutes to make so there’s no excuses guys!

Your Buddy,

Mark

Yeah, I tried this once. It’s pretty expensive for the serving size, IMNSHO, and pretty high calorie for the serving size too. Fine for you guys trying to bulk, not so good for me, ’cause I’d want to eat the whole block at once! I’ve never seen light halloumi in the US, so that might be a better option if you’re like me and trying to lose but still interested in trying this dish.

Nice Idea, only thing to keep in mind with this is the sodium content, I think it’s one of the highest in cheeses or it’s up there. So if you eat alot of this like I did over the weekend and drink plenty of water the scales may go up slightly due to the water retention. But thats nothing to worry too much about.

Thanks

Hey Mark, do you feel that taking amino acids before and after working out are beneficial. I already take a whey powder right after working out. Would it be worth it to buy some bcaa’s??
thanks

@Dustin. Either one is fine. BCAA’s won’t enhance results any more than your protein will. Either choice is good.
If you’re already using protein, just stick with that.

Great recipe. Have you ever tried Lavash bread? I swear by the stuff. I had a hard time finding the mama lupes tortilla you spoke about. Check out the nutritional info on it. http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-calories/food/josephs/lavash-bread

hi mark,i want to ask if nutrela(or soyabean) is a good protein diet since on the cover label it is written to contain 52% protein.

7 Mark McManus July 15, 2009 at 10:01 pm

@Razor. There is a debate on the healthfulness of soy/soya, especially for men.
I don’t think infrequent use would be a problem but the vast majority of your protein intake should be from animal sources.
Hopefully we’ll know more on the soy issue definitively before too long.

@Cito. I’ve heard of it but never tried it. Looks great!
