Truvia – Natural Zero Calorie Sweetener Arrives!

by Mark McManus on July 18, 2008

truvia sweetenerI have been waiting on a zero calorie all-natural sweetener for years!
It seems like my wait is finally over :)

The sweetener Truvia (pronounced true-vee-ah) is an all natural stevia-based zero calorie sweetener. Check out the video…

The Cargill company are currently seeking FDA approval – GRAS (General Recommended As Safe) to allow manufacturers to make products such as Coca-Cola with Truvia.

In my opinion, it’s about bloody time. It’s not available for the mass market just yet but you can get it online at the truvia website. I can’t wait! :)

It may sound ideal, but have you considered the downsides of zero-calorie sweeteners, even natural? Sweetness is strongly associated with sugar in our bodies, and while Stevia may be a natural substance, we may not have evolved to react to it differently than to sugar. If so, natural or not, it may not be beneficial to either health or body composition to use zero-calorie sweeteners. See this paper:
Swithers SE, Davidson TL. A role for sweet taste: calorie predictive relations in energy regulation by rats. Behavioral Neuroscience. 2008 Feb Vol 122(1) 161-173.
